Local police have charged a woman with blackmail linked to animal rights extremism and Darley Oaks Farm in Newchurch. The 34-year-old woman was charged with 15 offences after answering bail at Weymouth police station, which follows on from her arrest in March by officers from Staffordshire Police's Public Order and Protest Unit. The charges include 11 of blackmail or attempted blackmail and four charges of interference with contractual links to animal research establishments. She was bailed to appear at Burton Magistrates' Court in Staffordshire on Friday (July 6). The alleged offences involve threatening letters and emails sent to a number of individuals and companies across the UK. Most of the victims had or have connections with animal research organisations. One of the companies had links with Darley Oaks Farm in Newchurch, which bred guinea pigs for research until January 2006. Staffordshire Police is leading the investigation, which involves seven other forces. |
